The Entry-Level Public Safety
Examination Process provides candidates with job opportunities
in a wide variety of job titles such as: Police Officer,
State and County Correction Officer, Sheriff's Officer, Firefighter, and many other public safety related titles.
Examinations for entry-level Law Enforcement positions are
announced every other December. The written test is typically
given in late spring after each announcement. Candidates may
use one application for all entry-level titles. Those who pass
will remain in the eligible pool for two years. The pool of
eligible candidates that result from the Entry-Level Law Enforcement
Examination (LEE) will be used to fill positions for law enforcement
titles in all Merit System jurisdictions.
Promotional examinations for
Law Enforcement titles are announced and given according to
established schedules for each title
group. For many of these promotional announcements, Orientation
Guides are also provided. These guides are designed to give
specific information regarding the testing process and to help
candidates prepare for their upcoming examination.
All Fire Testing Unit activities fall under the scrutiny of
the U.S. Department of Justice. The format used for the entry-level
Firefighter Test has been reviewed and approved by the U.S.
Justice Department. This test is now being given to potential
Firefighter candidates every two years. The promotional selection
process in New Jersey's Merit System is designed to provide
all applicants with an equal opportunity to compete for a promotional
position. The examination serves as one objective tool in this
process. Test scores will be used to identify qualified candidates
and to generate a list of eligibles to be considered for appointment
by each jurisdiction. Additional information, including Orientation
Guides for promotional announcements, are available on our
website. Click here for more
