  PROFESSIONAL, TECHNICAL, AND MANAGERIAL OCCUPATIONS
 
This major category includes occupations concerned with the theoretical, practical, and managerial aspects of such fields of human endeavor as: architecture; engineering; physical, life, and social sciences; psychological and counseling services; medicine and health; education; museum, library, and archival sciences; law; writing; commercial arts; recreation; financial specialties; administrative specialties; inspections and investigations; and public broadcasting. Also includes occupations in support of the above. Also includes managerial occupations which may cross other categories in this dictionary. Most of these occupations require higher educational preparation or its equivalency in experience.
 
OCCUPATIONS ENGINEERING AND SURVEYING
  This subcategory includes occupations concerned with the practical application of physical laws and principles of engineering for the development and utilization of machines, materials, instruments, structures, processes, and services. Typical specializations are research, design, construction, testing, procurement, production, and operations. Also includes preparation of drawings, specifications, and cost estimates, and participation in verification tests. Excludes occupations, regardless of discipline, in which the primary function is inspection or investigation.

  This subcategory includes occupations concerned with human society and its characteristic elements, and with economic and social relations, and institutions involved in human existence in organized communities. Also includes occupations concerned with planning (community and social service programs, and urban/regional planning), land use assessment and development, real estate and community housing, economic development, and program development that is directly related to community or service oriented programs. Excludes occupations concerned with grants development.

  OCCUPATIONS IN SOCIAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES
  This subcategory includes occupations concerned with: rendering assistance to individuals or groups with problems, such as poverty, illness, family maladjustments, antisocial behavior, financial mismanagement, and inadequate housing; the collection, interpretation, and application of scientific data relating to human behavior and mental processes; providing individual and group guidance and counseling services relative to problems of a(n) educational, vocational, rehabilitative, or personal/social nature. Also includes occupations concerned with religious worship, observance, and guidance.

OCCUPATIONS IN MEDICAL AND HEALTH SERVICES

  This subcategory includes occupations concerned with the health care and treatment of humans or animals in the fields of medicine, surgery, and dentistry; and in related patient-care areas, such as nursing, therapy, dietetics, prosthetics, rehabilitation, and pharmacy. Includes occupations in environmental and public health, and in laboratories and other health facilities. Also included are titles dealing with disease vectors contained in consumable products, such as milk or shellfish. Many occupations in this subcategory require licensing or registration.
